PRODI (Pilotproject: 2017 -2019)

Encouragement of sustainable insect breeding among women in the Muyuka (southwest Cameroon) area to enhance their own and their children's diets and generate extra revenue by producing new goods based on durable insects that can be sold in local markets or eaten at home.

In order for project participants and families trained in insect farming to produce insects sustainably and under basic conditions for their own consumption or for marketing, insect breeding introduction kits were created as part of the pilot project and tested in accordance with local conditions.

84 families from the Muyuka neighborhood received training as part of the project, followed by an insect farming introduction kit. 57 families in PRODI1 were able to generate, on average, 3–8 kg of insects per month at home in February 2019.
PRODI1 Results in 2019:

  • Farms have always been infested with flies and phoretic mites, which arrive on farms with green fodder. They can be successfully combated by a particular management of hygiene.
  • Standard kits have been created to control microbial and chemical properties.
  • As part of a questionnaire, consumption habits and preferences were evaluated locally. Several innovative insect-based products have been proposed, salty snacks based on crickets being the most appreciated.
  • The first trials focused on insect homogenizers (including flour) used as a base for crackers or spicy pastes.
