The Cameroonian health authorities have recorded a sharp increase in new cases of cholera. The epidemic began in the year 2021 and has spread to at least three cities in the southwest of the country. Hospitals are filling up with patients.
The health minister of Cameroon said on Friday, March 25, that cholera claimed the lives of 29 individuals there last week. Western Cameroon is mostly affected by this current outbreak. "Between 16 and 22 March 2022, a cholera outbreak was reported in the southwest, with over 300 cases reported," Malachi posted to Twitter. Three large cities in western Cameroon and two in the capital, Yaoundé, saw 27 cholera-related deaths.
According to him, the cholera outbreak since October 2021 has resulted in around 2,100 cases and 62 fatalities. Dr. Malachie noted in a another tweet that "The incident management system has been activated (...) to ensure coordination of actions taken and reactive vaccination." Between January and August of 2020, cholera claimed 66 lives in the nation.
